01 Overall Scale
Twenty-two eventful years have been a journey through wind and rain. Located in Pinghu, Longgang, a new city in northern Shenzhen, Shenzhen Overseas Chinese Hospital Affiliated to Jinan University (formerly Shenzhen Shenlian Hospital) has, through 22 years of strenuous efforts, gradually developed into a tertiary general hospital integrating emergency care, prevention, medical treatment, rehabilitation, health care, scientific research, and teaching. It has a building area of 52,000 m² and 510 authorized beds, and operates five community health service centers and three emergency first-aid stations. Along the way, generations of hospital staff have worked tirelessly and shed their sweat, laying a solid foundation for the dream of achieving tertiary Grade A hospital status.

02 Development History
A roc rises with the wind in one day, soaring ninety thousand li into the sky. In May 2000, Shenzhen Shenlian Hospital was founded. From the outset, the hospital took “standardized operation and honest hospital management” as its tenet. It took the lead in opening a green channel for medical treatment for migrant workers from more than 200 foreign-funded and overseas Chinese-funded enterprises and more than 500 domestic-funded enterprises in the surrounding area, reduced or waived medical expenses, and provided treatment first and collected payment later for all acute and severe patients, winning patients’ praise and trust. To improve its medical technology level, in December 2009, the hospital partnered with Jinan University, a century-old university for overseas Chinese, to jointly establish Shenzhen Shenlian Hospital Affiliated to the Medical College of Jinan University, opening a brand-new chapter in the hospital’s development. In May 2010, with the approval of the Shenzhen Municipal Health Commission and the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government, the hospital was renamed Shenzhen Overseas Chinese Hospital, becoming the first non-public hospital in Shenzhen named after “Overseas Chinese.” To provide residents with more convenient medical services, the hospital actively responded to healthcare reform policies by establishing five community health centers in Bainikeng, Fucheng’ao, Liang’antian, Shangmugu, and Pinghu communities, and setting up three emergency first-aid stations at the hospital and at the Fucheng’ao and Bainikeng community health centers, proactively undertaking public health services.

In December 2009, it was officially inaugurated as the Affiliated Hospital of the Medical College of Jinan University.

On May 16, 2010, Shenzhen Shenlian Hospital was officially renamed Shenzhen Overseas Chinese Hospital.

04 Specialty Development
An extraordinary journey creates extraordinary achievements. Like the ceaselessly flowing sea, it has crossed torrents and dangerous shoals all the way, heading toward a broader future. At present, the hospital has 33 clinical and medical technology departments, including General Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, Cardiovascular Medicine, Nephrology, Orthopedics, Minimally Invasive Surgery, Hand Surgery, Neurosurgery, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Rehabilitation Medicine, Stomatology, Medical Cosmetology, Otolaryngology, and others. In discipline development, five key disciplines have been advanced simultaneously. With Hand Surgery as the flagship, five specialties—General Surgery, Orthopedics, Gynecology, Obstetrics, and Radiology—have been developed as the hospital’s key disciplines. The hospital actively carries out new technologies and new projects, continuously improves its medical, teaching, and research capabilities, promotes discipline development, and enhances its core competitiveness. With the technical support of Jinan University, since 2015, the hospital’s Orthopedics Department has made breakthrough progress in the treatment of ankylosing spondylitis, artificial hip replacement, and other procedures, successfully treating more than 100 patients with ankylosing spondylitis. In 2018, the Gallstone Center of Shenzhen Overseas Chinese Hospital under the China Gallstone Disease Prevention and Treatment Specialty Medical Consortium was officially established.

To provide more comprehensive services for patients, the hospital is equipped with advanced medical equipment and modern laminar-flow operating rooms, including GE 1.5T superconducting MRI, Philips 64-row 128-slice CT, Philips Epiq 7C advanced cardiac color Doppler ultrasound, 4D color Doppler ultrasound, a digital subtraction angiography (DSA) system, a German laparoscope, a hysteroscopy surgical system, Olympus electronic gastroscope and colonoscope, and other advanced equipment.
05 Public Welfare
As the first hospital in Shenzhen named after “Overseas Chinese” and an overseas Chinese entrepreneurs’ public welfare and charitable enterprise, the hospital actively fulfills its social responsibilities by helping the poor and those in critical need. It has donated a cumulative total of several million yuan to disaster-stricken areas and reduced or waived more than 12 million yuan in medical expenses for impoverished people. It initiated the establishment of Shenzhen’s first “Volunteer Team Serving Overseas Chinese,” held over 100 large-scale free medical consultation events for people in overseas Chinese hometowns, and for many consecutive years organized medical teams to Malaysia to provide free medical consultations for local overseas Chinese and promote traditional Chinese medicine cultural exchanges. Since 2014, the hospital has provided medical and health services to 13 groups of elderly returned overseas Chinese from Hong Kong and Macao. Its high-quality services have been highly recognized and unanimously praised by leaders of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council and the returned overseas Chinese.

06 Service Enhancement
Adhering to the service philosophy of “putting patients at the center of everything,” the hospital has launched an online hospital, enabling online health consultation, diagnosis and treatment, medication inquiries, and health record management. It has built a “Bank-Medical · Smart + Healthcare” platform, through which patients can use smart bank-medical self-service terminals for self-service registration, outpatient payment, medical insurance payment, report inquiries, and other self-service medical services. The whole-process self-service medical care model greatly reduces the need for patients to queue and wait in the hospital, optimizes the medical treatment process, and brings patients a brand-new medical experience.
A workman must first sharpen his tools if he is to do his work well. To provide patients with a more comfortable medical environment and high-quality medical services, the hospital has built a café, added smart nursing wards, and renovated its operating rooms, ICU, delivery rooms, and other facilities. At the same time, it has strengthened education on medical ethics and professional conduct, regularly organized training for all hospital staff to improve medical quality and optimize medical services, established a Health Lecture Series, and actively given play to the leading role of Party building by organizing Party members and volunteers to participate in volunteer services and contribute to society.

Standing at a New Starting Point, Opening Up New Prospects
In the future, Shenzhen Overseas Chinese Hospital will continue to strive tirelessly for the dream of becoming a Tertiary Grade A hospital, further enhance its comprehensive strength, and endeavor to achieve another leap forward in the construction of the “dual zones”—the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Pilot Demonstration Area. It will provide citizens with higher-quality medical services and make greater contributions to the development of Shenzhen’s healthcare sector.
